The Spanish distributor is participating in the KeyKeg collection community in Spain. BeerBox is a distributor of beer and dispensing equipment in Spain and Portugal and are located in Barcelona and Madrid. They will collect empty KeyKegs and UniKegs from their customers such as bars, restaurants and festivals in Barcelona region.

Over the past year, OneCircle has collected kegs used at festivals and created fully operational networks in the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and France. The community consists of brewers, beverage distributors, specialist waste-management companies and OneCircle. Together we are ensuring that KeyKegs are becoming a circular product instead of being incinerated or ending up in landfill. The material from the KeyKegs is re-used to make new KeyKegs.

Pepe Rodés CEO of BeerBox: "Most of the beer we import and distribute is in Keykegs, which is great because it's light, resistant and breweries don't need to charge a deposit when shipping abroad.

"Nowadays thousands of KeyKegs are burnt or buried as garbage in Spain. We wanted to fix this, so we contacted OneCircle and reached an agreement. Once we made it known that we were joining forces with OneCircle to collect the empty KeyKegs so they could be made into new kegs, we had a lot of enthusiastic feedback. This will lower the CO2 footprint of our company we'll ensure that the materials in KeyKegs won't end up in landfills and incinerators but can be used over and over again.

"We make use of the existing transport system when collecting', says Pepe. 'When we deliver full KeyKegs we take the empty ones back with us, so we don't have to plan any extra runs. Our warehouse has a baler from OneCircle for making empty KeyKegs into bales. OneCircle picks up the bales and processes them in their recycling line. They take thousands of empties with them every time."

As a member of the collection community, Beerbox is also a drop-off point for bars wanting to bring in their empty kegs to be recycled by OneCircle.

Annemieke Hartman of OneCircle: "BeerBox is a welcome partner in Spain to actively help build up the Spanish collection community. They're doing it not only out of the conviction that they want to make their business sustainable, but also because they see added value for their customers and their business model. By actively helping us to achieve circular packaging, they're strengthening their business as well as their customer relationships. What's more, they're directly increasing their customer base this way. We're very happy with BeerBox's active contribution."

Sustainable packaging solution
The family owned business has an eye for the long term and especially for the environment. For this reason OneCircle (www.onecirclecommunity.com) was launched to create and implement collection networks in a number of countries and, where possible, adding to the existing waste streams.
One Circle's activities are continuous work in progress, but we are committed to taking responsibility for the end of life of our kegs and to partnering with relevant businesses to create a circular economy.
